Um.

So much of Evan's reactions to things lately could be summed up with 'um,' it seemed. Today's 'um' was the island's latest bout of bookstore mischief, because he'd nearly had to chase a few getaway books out the door when he opened it this morning for the start of his shift.

He wasn't going to ask why some of the books had been outfitted with wheels, or where they were trying to go. He was just going to attempt to corral them into a little paddock he'd fashioned out of some overturned chairs and empty spare shelving, until he could figure out what else he could possibly do with them.

... Maybe race them.

"Are you serious?" That was the first thing out of Celia's mouth when she arrived at work today. She'd been looking forward to a quiet afternoon researching and drinking tea, and instead --

"Rabbits? Honestly? Why in the world would we --" It dawned on her, belatedly, as she inspected the cages and cages of rabbits, that some magicians did use them. She huffed in irritation, then set to work placing an order for them to be picked up again (it was obviously a mistake) before carefully beginning the task of transporting the rabbits to the back room.

...by the time she was down to the last few, she was taking them out of their cages and cuddling them individually. They may have names. Shh, she wasn't a soft touch, at all.

Vic was getting her first phone call that involved Fandom strangeness.

"Yes. I'm very sorry that duct taping a crystal back to your stomach isn't making you feel happy or loving."

And Vic was handling it in a truly professional manner.

"Seriously, this is creepy. Fuck off and don't call again."

Ralph gave her a look as she hung up and went to get another cup of coffee.

"I'm shooting for employee of the month. Screw you Ralph."

She was integrating with the island very nicely.

Memorial Day was the unofficial kickoff to summer, which was probably why the zombies were playing nothing but beachy or summer-themed music all during Kitty's shift.

She had to admit, though, their cover of Help Me, Rhonda was surprisingly great.

Could you blame Éponine for being late to work this morning because after an extra day of not having to work she was more reluctant than usual to get up and go do things?

Well, she'd argue that you couldn't, anyway.

By now she knew to expect the backlog of mail that came in courtesy of other countries and universes where yesterday hadn't been a holiday -- which is how she knew to step to one side immediately after opening the door to the sorting room.

Once the highly localized avalanche of mail stopped pouring out she looked down at it (and atop it the two ferrets who'd just started working in the mailroom last week) with a faintly pitying expression. "You're clever, aren't you, that's what you think. Not as clever as me, though."

Another Tuesday! Rikku was playing around with knives today. Sure, it was a gun shop, but that didn't mean she couldn't upgrade some machetes, did it? Because machetes were cool.

(Open / ocd-free / I flee for work!)

It had been most of a month since Gert's death, and that was enough time for Bay to start to heal. Enough time for her to appreciate the summer-like heat in the air on her walk to the diner, to smile when a song she liked came on the kitchen radio. It wasn't that she'd stopped hurting, but for the first time it seemed like she wouldn't always hurt, and that was what mattered.

She put the relatively increase in energy to work, pulling out the cleaning supplies to give the back booths in the diner what seemed like an overdue scrubbing. It was just in time: she swore one of the food stains on the floor was starting to sprout fur.

Welcome to Luke's!

"Do you think they have Swedish meatballs I can take home?" Ben asked Ender as they found a spot to sit. "My chair needs to be refueled."

It was possible he was saying this just to mess with Ender, but he just loved the "sometimes I wonder what on Earth I was thinking" look on Ender's face, too.
