The first thing Aeryn did when she got in to work today was go through the mail, where she found a brick. She'd been here a few months and was beginning to pick up some things, but this was a new one.

The brick was now sitting in a display case. It was a blunt object, obviously it was a weapon of some sort.

It was hot on the island. Like, too hot. Can't-breathe-outside kind of hot. The kind of heat where, even though Book Haven had air conditioning, it didn't make much difference. Alana was only wearing her tank top and shorts, and she was contemplating whether stripping down to her bra would constitute public indecency. It was the first day she'd been grateful for that weird cold spot just inside her Ingvar bedroom door.

She drank a lot of cold water and slowly unpacked things, occasionally pausing to fan herself with a book.

So it turned out that the newspaper from yesterday hadn't been incorrect, and Irene had apparently either been thrust into a very stupid joke, or traveled through time. She was open to either -- if anyone in the world was capable of either or both those things at once, it was the man who'd placed her here -- but the most important thing to her mind was to figure what had happened in the two-odd years she'd missed.

So, Wednesday found her taking a break from her own inventory and curling up in the corner of the coffee shop she'd found with a stack of newspapers and her laptop. (And coffee and a muffin, of course. She could not live on news alone.) She'd work her way through the print media, first (careful not to get any ink smudges on her skin or clothes), and then see what the internet had to offer. That seemed like the most efficient way to do this.

"Oh, good," she murmured to herself as she perused the entertainment section. "Those damned Kardashians are still around."

She'd kind of hoped that a perk of time-travel (if she had done such a thing) would be that the bothersome people of her own time might be solidly out of the spotlight, at least. No such luck.

Maddie was happy to be doing work today, because it meant that she wasn't in that creepy house for a while. She'd been hearing weird noises all night, which had been annoying at first and then started freaking her out when they went on too long, and that was only today's weirdness.

Maybe she could create enough busy work for herself here that she could even work some overtime?

If you didn't think Josh Lyman loved the Fourth of July as much as he loved baseball and apple pie and all things America, you had never met him. Naturally he'd volunteered to put up posters for the 4th of July picnic and fireworks all over town, including the dock (because as much as he'd like to keep all the corn on the cob to himself, that was kind of rude and so the students should come too. Sigh.)

FOURTH OF JULY PICNIC AND FIREWORKS EXTRAVAGANZA
FREE FOOD
THINGS THAT BLOW UP
YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO BE THERE

The beach, after classes until it's dark enough to see fireworks. BYOB (not you, kids)
