Book Haven, Monday

A series of bad dreams the night before had left Rosalind in a rather out-of-sorts mood as she manned her shop. Given the small number of people she knew on the island, she figured no one would notice.

Which was, in a way that was probably side-ways, rather comforting.

Aside from the occasional ruffling of pages, the books seemed to be behaving themselves today. She left them to their ruffling.

Flicking an imaginary bit of lint off her more immaculate than usual uniform, Rosalind turned on the radio, just to give the store some noise as she worked.

Irene had stayed in town this weekend in the hopes that she wouldn't miss anything else fascinating that might happen, but no such luck. It had been almost unbearably quiet, driving her to renew old bad habits.

Yes, she could have just picked up a book, but that was much less interesting, all things considered. Instead, Irene had merely glanced at some tabloid sites yesterday, and had been almost unable to stop reading off her phone since. It wasn't that she cared what anyone was really up to, according to the paparazzi. It was more that she knew some of these people, and seeing what they'd done in the last two years was fascinating -- particularly when she knew more about them than the writers of this trash did.

Of particular interest to her this morning was little Prince George -- it wasn't every day that one found out that one's country had a new little heir eventual. And it was even less often that one had such inside knowledge of the royal pairing from which he'd been born.

At least Kate was still looking quite fit, Irene decided as she pored over photos and sipped her coffee this morning. Probably loads less fun, though.

Any of yesterday's homesickness was gone. Or it was being repressed. Whichever one it was, the result was the same. No one was going to see that sometimes even people like Hatter missed home. Really, he just hoped no one had torched his tea shop while he'd been gone. Then, he'd be pissed.

He was sitting in his chair behind the tea counter, writing out a list of possible name changes for the restaurant because Cafe Fina continued not to sit really well with him even if he could think of nothing better. But, there had to be something out there and he knew he'd have a moment of creativity when he least expected it.

TODAY'S TEA SPECIALS
Peachberry Jasmine Sutra Green Tea
Tomato Lime Cocktail Herbal Tea
Cranberry Singapore Rooibos Tea

"What even is a Fina, anyway?" Hatter muttered, tapping his pen against the yellow legal pad. "Doesn't even make sense."

Look, Surreal had taken last Monday off because she'd needed a day to laugh herself sick recover from being a Bad Influence and bank robber.

That meant today she was going to put in an extra-long shift. Or rather, it was a good thing she'd already planned on extra hours today, because she couldn't get into the Magic Box. Both the front and back doors were blocked with deliveries. Piles and piles of boxes, and when Surreal opened them, well...

She was going to blame the move back to the dorms. Clearly, Ingvar already missed them. Not that it was going to stop her from hanging half of the stuff up, or putting it on sale: sometimes it was fun to mess with people's preconceptions of Craft.

The Magic Box was open, and the former Bonnie of Bonnie-and-Bonnie was behind the counter.

Jack's way into the club this morning was blocked by a pile of unmarked cardboard boxes. (He would have sniped at Tiny about not having moved them, but sniping at Tiny had never accomplished anything in all their time together. Jack preferred to suffer in silence.)

Once he opened one, he found it was full of orange and black crepe streamers and plastic jack-o-lanterns. The second box yielded fake cobwebs, complete with rubber spiders, while the third held cardboard ghosts, mummies and vampires to stick on the walls and -- just in case Jack had missed the theme -- a banner reading, "HAVE A SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN."

He laughed for a moment, fist over his mouth, then put the decorations up. He sensed a themed drink night coming on.

Welcome to Halloween in July!
Specials: Black Devil Martini
Smoking Skulls Shots
Morgue-a-Rita
Free drink if you come in costume!

The music seemed to be in a mood today. The disc player would randomly spit out discs Mercy put in and play other random music that technically it didn't have access to.

And it apparently wasn't interested in letting her enjoy anything it played, because as soon as she got into whatever random selection she came up with, the player would stop it mid-note and try something else.

Which was why Mercy could be found washing the front windows and cleaning up the sidewalk in front of the store With the doors closed.

Kenzi was there. Sort of. Practicing her drumming with the zombies counted, right?

Tino did not appear to agree.
