Not a lot of D. Oswald Heist's work made it to Book Haven, and the copies they got tended to be weird versions that had been badly adapted for an Earthling audience. But today was Alana's lucky day, because not only was there a whole set of original editions of the Bloodsuckers of the Robot Kingdom series packed deep in a box of boring literary fiction, but it included a new book that she hadn't read yet. So now the only decision Alana had to make about how to spend her day -- once she was done with the boring parts involving actually keeping the store running -- was whether she wanted to dive right into the new one, or start from the first book to refresh her memory.

She went with the new one. Countess Robot XIV had been tied up and thrown in a rocket bound for Sextillion at the end of the last book, and there was no way Alana could wait however long it took her to reread a couple hundred pages to find out how she got out of that one.

Roland was in a pretty good mood, today. The weather was crisp and delightfully autumnal -- so, you know, actually cool enough for the jacket he wore every day -- his morning caffeine hadn't come with any uncomfortable and melancholy reminders, and Canada had decided to give a thirty thousand dollar prize to a delightfully and astonishingly weird native singer instead of yet-another-pop-group.

He himself wasn't about to try any throat singing -- just listening too long made him want a lozenge -- but he was breaking out of his "classic" rut to try out something contemporary.

Just don't ask him to go pop. He had Feelings about pop music, okay?

[ooc: and now I'm about to make myself late to work because of throat singing. Woo!]

Kira was trying not to be nervous as she and Johnny got settled at their table. It wasn't like this was a serious date - Johnny went on tons of dates - but that was also the problem because he was clearly an expert dater, while Kira was on date number three or four of her life. Still, she was feeling pretty cute today, which went a long way to getting her to stay smiling.

"Have you eaten here before? I feel like I should have tried every place once by now, but I really haven't," she said.

[For the date!]
