Alana hadn't been to the shop in what seemed like weeks, but the good news was it didn't seem like anyone had bothered to fire her, either. She highly approved of this management technique.

Once she'd dusted off everything that seemed to have gotten grungy in her absence, she put together a new display of books about outdoor adventures. (With a couple books about climbing mount Everest near the center because everybody loved a good disaster story.) Parker and Eliot's class was inspiring that way.

It was Cosima's first day of her first job, so she showed up early and bearing the coffee Tony had asked for. (Pepper, whoever she was, hadn't seemed overly thrilled about the centrality of coffee to the hiring process, but she'd put Cosima's paperwork through anyhow. So that was good.)

And then, once she'd dusted off the old-fashioned help wanted sign in the window, there was nothing to do but explore and -- once she'd explored everything she wasn't too nervous about breaking to touch -- sit and wait and see if anyone came in.

That got boring surprisingly fast.

"Jarvis?" she asked the speaker on the wall. "Is playing 20 Questions an insult to your dignity?"

Never had Jasper looked more like some tourist than when he'd finally gotten to the beach. Lobo's Nod did not have any water save for green tinged lakes and tiny creeks. He'd never put his feet in the sand and felt the chilly water rushing up around his ankles. He wiggled his toes and felt the wet dirt stick to the tops of his feet.

It tickled.

No rest for the wicked, Jasper.

Of course. Jasper closed his eyes and shut his father's voice out. He didn't deserve to be here. He didn't want his father looking over his shoulder, hands on his shoulders and giving him some morbid pep talk about leaving some girl on the beach because the water would take away all the evidence, make it look accidental until the dumb cops took a closer look.

No. One hand clenched, fingers digging into his palm and, eventually, his father disappeared. Later, he'd probably dream but he was alone now. The water had wet the ends of his rolled up jeans. Jasper knelt down and stuck his hand underneath the water, watching his fingers disappear.

What the hell am I?

Question for the ages. Jasper missed Howie. He even missed G. William. This place was so weird.

There was someone in the air ducts. Kenzi had a broom, and was poking it at the ducts every once in a while, to the tone of some swearing drifting down.

The kitchen staff was staying far away from her, and whoever or whatever was up there.

SPECIALS
Grilled Sharp Cheddar Cheese and Pear sandwich
Chicken and Wild Rice Soup with Mushrooms
Salted Caramel Apple Pie Bars

Buffy was spending her shift browsing the internet on her laptop. She was searching for local suspicious-possibly-supernatural news stories to see if she could possibly get some slaying done this weekend. Maybe she'd just find a random graveyard on the mainland to hang around in.

Her weekend plans were weird.
