There was a bouquet on the counter. It was somewhat less than perfect, but Peter was trying.

He was actually trying really, really hard, if only to avoid thinking about the memories he'd dredged up last night. When he had this one looking halfway decent, he'd start on another one. Or maybe the shop could use a new coat of paint?

He should get a radio or something in here, to help occupy his thoughts.

But the shop was open!

"No, thank you," he told his patient on her way out the door, "I believe I'm fine." She was somehow convinced that as part of a "bachelor household", tuna casserole would be a lovely gift for him.

It was really not the least of her problems. But she would keep him occupied for some time, at least. He smiled and waved as she left.
