Eliot was not madly cooking today. Rather he was tucked into a booth in the back corner of the dining room, pounding through coffee like it was his job and growling halfheartedly at his staff when they came over to check on him.

"This is bad," the dishwasher said. The kitchen staff was huddled together at the window, watching him from a distance. "I've never seen him like this before."

"Is he even drunk?" asked the cook. The busboy shook his head.

"What are we going to do?" the dishwasher asked.

The three exchanged looks.

Five minutes later, the diner's music was switched to electronica and flashing colored lights had been set up on the lunch counter, as the staff threw an impromptu dance party in an attempt to annoy their boss out of his funk.

There had been dead people this weekend, and Hannibal had no doubt some people were traumatized, either from their visitors or from their lack of them.

So, today signs went up and an e-mail post went out:

Dinner, drinks, and games at 22 Phoenix Place this evening. Whether you had visitors or not, come and recover or make sure others have. 7pm

Alluka wasn't very sad when she wandered into work--late, but she'd been up late and then woken up late and the whole day had just followed that way--but she did have the stuffed elephant that Kathy had given her instead of one of her usual companions, which meant she was at least a little sad.

But they weren't going to dwell on that.

Instead, she and her elephant were looking for a new dress for her to wear. Something different. Something new.

(Maybe Kathy would like it, next time she visited.)
