Today Groovy Tunes had a selection of portable wind-up gramophones on display. Breq recognised them from books, but she hadn't actually heard them, and was quite pleased when she found a box of records. A very simple technology, and the sound left a lot to be desired, but Breq found turning records and winding up the gramophones quite fun. As far as she could understand, the music was popular songs from the 1930s, which, if she remembered correctly, was when these music players were manufactured. They got even more interesting when she played all of the gramophones at the same time and combined them, even if she was well aware that probably wasn't the original intention.
