"What?" asked Rosa, frowning with her eyebrows at the troopers. "So I take one weekend off to try and patch things up with my mom and I come back and there's people missing?"
The troopers confirmed that, yes, this was the case.
"You know I had to sit through the entire Minions musical this weekend, right?" said Rosa, who wanted at least someone to have to share in her suffering for this.
The troopers expressed their deepest condolances.
Rosa didn't buy it for a second, eyeing them suspiciously as she, with her coffee now, returned to her desk and had a seat.
"And we're sure," she ventured, "that she didn't just wake up one morning and realize she was dating Duke Crocker?"
And, yes, the troopers wore helmets, but Rosa recognized a look even when she didn't see it.
"What?" she asked. "I've skipped out on entire continents before just to get out of a relationship."
There was still a look there. It was a different look, but it was there, Rosa could tell. So she sighed.
"Fine," she said. "You know what to do. Keep a close eye and an ear on the ground, get in touch with the squirrels, if anyone else goes missing, we need to be the first to know about it. People start going missing at the start of a new session around here, who knows where it's going to lead? Maybe we can get a head start before people wind up in volcanoes or nightmare forest prisons or giant glaciers or whatever else stupid thing we're going to have to deal with next."
But, really, Rosa still wanted to put her money down on her first guess. Blake seemed like a smart girl, after all, but this was Fandom. There was no way it was going to let things be that simple.
