somethingwithturquoise: (who the fuck is taddy mason?)

Summer had expected at least a little bit of fallout from her parents for having totally ditched them for Thanksgiving to go do stuff with Barry and jello in Utah instead, but she hadn't really expected her father to successfully circumnavigate her ignoring his calls to her actual phone by just calling the store, where it was too late by the time she picked up and realized what was happening to just hang up, though she was building up to making up an excuse that, oh no, something weird was happening to the phone lines! The call could drop at literally any mome--

But Jerry Smith had an amazing ability to keep a person on the line by causing them to boggle at him so much that they'd forget to even try to just hang up.

"--and, you know," he was saying, "I could come by and help you out with it, or better yet, you can bring it here! There's plenty of space in the driveway, I can break out the old tool kit, you could bring Barry, I know your mother and I would really like to meet him, you guys looked like you were having fun on your trip..."

"Dad," Summer cut him off before the thread went too far down along that line, "have you ever even winterized a ship before?"

"Well, no," Jerry admitted, "but it can't be that much different than doing it for a car, right?"

"Dad," Summer informed him, "it's literally designed to handle the vast, cold infinite emptiness of space. I think it can handle a Maryland winter just fine."

"Well, you can never be too sure, sweetie." To call it insistence would be a misnomer; it was more of a gentle prodding that was ready for hasty retreat. "I'm just saying, it wouldn't hurt, and you really should come visit more, we hardly see you anymore these days."

Summer was almost tempted to point out that there were reasons for that, that it was very much intentional, but she didn't want to get into it, not right now, not when there were so many more important things on her mind and to do, so she just sighed, pinched the bridge of her nose a little, and relented a little. "I'll see what I can do, okay?" she said. "I just have a lot going on right now, okay? We're heading into December, Christmas is always crazy around here, but maybe...maybe after the holidays, okay, when I have a little time to breathe?"

"That's fine," said Jerry, after a pause long enough that Summer had almost just hung up in an attempt to seize a moment. "We know you like your space, but I just know it would mean a lot to your mother if--"

That was enough to get a groan out of Summer and push her to that edge. "I know," she said firmly. "I know, okay? It's just right now's not a good time, and...Dad, I have to go anyway, I have a customer, I promise we'll talk later, okay?"

There was no customer. Summer just needed to keep that from going into a familiar loop, and she took a breath, tried to refocus and get back to her orders, until the store's phone started ringing again.

She looked at Apu as if daring him to pick it up, tried to ignore it, but, in the case that it was a legit customer calling....she caved in and picked it up herself.

"Summer? Hi, it's your mom. Now, I know you were just talking to your father, but I was thinking..."

At this point, Summer was seriously thinking of just setting the phone down on the counter and walking about to do her crap until Beth ran out of steam.

Turtle & Canary is open!

Out of all the random little handwavey cases Rosa had on her desk right now to keep herself busy through the week, she was apparently making a breakthrough that Monday on the last one she would have expected to.

But, apparently, there was some random bakery in Portland that made what looked like almost an exact replica of the muffin that they used to make at the Perk that one of her Baltimore contacts was worrisomely obsessed with.

Of course, it was a little bit odd that the hardest part now seemed to be bouncing back and forth between trying to figure out if it was Portland, Maine, or Portland, Oregon, something that you'd think would not be that difficult, and yet there they were, in a process so needlessly convoluted that Rosa would have just abadoned the whole thing as not even worth her time if it weren't for the fact that, honestly? All she had lately was time, and she really didn't have anything better to do, anyway.

After about the third one, she was starting to think that doing nothing would actually be a better use of her time than tracking down and investigating every bakery in both cities from her desk, though...

Annie had gotten back to town this afternoon, arriving with barely enough time to throw her bag vaguely in the direction of her closet before she had to head into work.

However, once she was at the bar, she set to work on a super-important task: testing out the punch recipe for Friday's party. She was pretty sure this was the one she wanted to go with, though she was eyeing the amount of vodka it called for and wondering if twelve ounces was really enough, since a fifth seemed to have, like, twice that?

"You're coming to the party on Friday, right?" she asked Tiny as she carefully mixed up a practice batch of the punch, with the actually-prescribed amount of vodka. "We're decorating cookies."

Because that was the hook, and not the inflatable reindeer or the jello shots or the way she was strongly considering boozing up a Sandra Lee punch recipe.

Tiny remained noncommittal, for the record.

Another day, another deep dive into Fandom's archives to work on the handbook. Jesse found herself trapped in her office - literally - for most of the day as she poured over more event logs.

Here and there, she scribbled down the odd note, to be sent up to the school board and various other figures of importance in Fandom's history.

So there's a weather machine under the island and it malfunctioned? Is there some kind of maintenance schedule we should put it on?

It was boring work, but at least she was busy.

"What do you mean 'the season's over'?"

Apparently one of the side effects of having been a raccoon for a month, and then wrapped up in various other transformations and assorted drama meant that you missed the back half of when your favorite caffeinated beverage was sold.

And this was how Octavia ended up sitting at a corner table, nursing a disappointing peppermint mocha instead of the PSL she'd come in for.

Steve was back from his long weekend in Hawai'i with his tan restored, snacks for the Troopers (hopefully they liked macadamia nuts), and a solar-powered dancing hula girl for his desk that Aunt Deb assured him would make him lighten up.

He was deeply dubious about that, but put it on his desk anyway.

Today he was at his desk catching up on reports about Fandom Advents of years past. He was learning to be afraid of showers in December.

Nell was in a particularly cheerful mood today. The moon had been beautiful last night and she'd spent some time out communing with the land and watching it. Today she was singing as she worked and encouraging all the flowers to sign along.

Except the lilies, since this group seemed to be rather tone deaf.
