You know what the great thing about Caritas (especially when no longer blocked by giant marzipan boulders) was?

The protection spell.

Because unless it decided to fail for whatever god-awful reason (and, really, let's be honest, that seemed like much more of a Thursday/Friday sort of thing to happen rather than a Wednesday), it could at least offer a decent respite from, you know, snow angels and sharkicanes and rock candy icicles.

A respite with booze!

Although Summer was really not expecting the usual big turnout tonight, because she'd rather people just stayed home and safe, but, on the other hand, Caritas was pretty safe, so...it felt like kind of a toss-up. There was just...a lot going on out there right now.

She was definitely side-eyeing the special Tino was adding to the board for boozy hot chocolate because she was 99.9% sure that he was just ducking out into the back alley and scooping it up from the flow that had sprung up back there.

Amaya figured she'd be pretty safe from angels made of snow inside her shop, which was always nice and toasty thanks to the forge, with plenty of other fire-related things close at hand, but she figured there was no point in holding her last movie class in these circumstances, especially if it meant having to deal with everything going on just for the sake of being forced to watch another ridiculous mushy romantic Christmas movie.

If Amaya ever found out that the equipment had actually planned to treat her to a surprise showing of meta for Die Hard, she would be very upset about her decision here.

But she didn't know, and since it was really just Lucille and Tisarwat that had been coming for a while, she just sent out a text to them to let them know that class was canceled for the evening and to keep themselves safe, while getting back to work and keeping a flamethrower close at hand in case any of those angels found their way in, since she highly doubted they'd be coming in for weapons, and even if they were coming in for weapons...yeah, Amaya had lines.

Her brain was itching a little, though, starting to wonder if this wasn't one of those things that wasn't going to go away unless they went and did something to make it go away.

Shunsui had found out the hard way that the snow angels around the island that day were absolutely not interested in flirting, and that was something that would put a damper on his day even if it weren't for the fact that what they were interested in was fighting and attacking if your guard was down.

Ugh. It was so annoying when this place insisted on the occasional fighty thing, and it put Shunsui in a little bit of a sour mood as he wondered if he should have just stayed in his apartment with his sake and bonsai, or, better yet, see if anything was going on back home in the Soul Society, because, yes, there were some times when he much preferred that nonsense over this nonsense, and it was seeming to be amping up to at least some sort of nonsense.

Maybe he'd just see how today went and take it from there.

So. These ice angels were now a thing, in addition to the candy canes, and the marzipan boulders, and the icicles from the sky. And now there were also rivers of hot chocolate and - look, she might have been used to human criminals, but Annie knew what she needed to do, all the same.

It seemed like a good time to get the cape out, was Starlight's thinking. While her one failed patrol of the island had been - well, exactly that, a bit of a failure - today seemed like a real opportunity to do some good.

She'd pulled on her sparkly winter tights and rolled on some thick socks under her boots (because that was the biggest acquiescence to the weather in this outfit, winter tights and wool socks. Best not to question it) before tucking her phone into the pouch on her belt and heading out to patrol the streets.

She was staying vigilant between blasting those creepy snow angels as they snuck up on her (it was extremely satisfying to make them break apart, let Starlight tell you, though she'd totally taken some ice claws to the face and it did not feel great no matter how bulletproof one's skin was.) She was getting pretty good at getting the candy canes as they sprang up, too, though of course now she had to watch her footing lest she fall into some hot chocolate. (The staining potential was the scariest part of all of this, to her.)

Most importantly, she was available to escort anyone who seemed to need protection just trying to get around, since the island was not exactly making that prospect easy.

Okay, so an angel made of snow - a creepy angel - had teamed up with one of those candy canes that still hung around and ganged up on Jesse. It'd been-- a while since she'd last had to use her powers on the island. Made her nervous.

And... well.

"Something isn't right here, Nina," she said to her assistant, quietly.

Her assistant shrugged. "Maybe your science guy knows more?"

"Or the magic girl," Jesse said. She sighed. "Right. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask around."

And so a message made its way onto Fandom's messaging platform: my gut feeling says something is off this week. If anyone has any good ideas or wants to help me pick through some files about advent, you're welcome at town hall.

In the background, Nina decided to get the nice plants out, just in case Jesse needed someone to talk to first.

Unlike what some may have expected, Octavia had not gone out in search of a fight (or several) today.

Didn't mean she didn't still have more than a few fresh scrapes on her when she came to work this evening, though. Or that the blades of her knives weren't currently colder than usual to the touch.

Or that there wasn't a part of her aching for her to go looking for a fight.

(Or several.)

But she was here, bartending. Memorizing the shelves, slowly drinking a glass of soda. And trying not to think too much.
