Homecoming had come and gone, bringing relative peace back to the island. Ender took advantage of the early morning quiet to catch up on his emails - as per usual - frowning at the lack of correspondence rolling into the folder he'd reserved for Ben's universe. A time freeze seemed increasingly more likely; Jane claimed she wasn't picking up any signals either.

Of course, since his email worked via Jane, it was also possible they were cutting her off. Not likely, but possible.

She babbled in his ear all through the morning about new ansible connections being finalized back home, increasing her cognitive abilities. He found he liked it; it felt as if they hadn't spoken much lately, and strangely, he'd missed it.

The hotel's staff had never worked a Darling birthday party before. By the time Juliet was done working them over and making sure everything looked right and sounded right and was almost as good as it would have been in New York, it was entirely possible they never would again. Still, the room looked amazing, so Juliet figured it was worth it.

The ballroom had been set up for a party, with a DJ booth to the side of the stage where Hannah Montana was scheduled to perform, a dance floor taking up most of the center of the room, and a few tables and chairs off to the side for wallflowers. Most of the drinks available were non-alcoholic, but there was probably some champagne around if you asked nicely or bribed the bartender. A gold -and-silver banner hung over the stage:

Happy 17th Jeremy & Juliet!

(And yes, there'd been some spirited discussion as to whose name went first. Alphabetical order carried the day.) A completely handwavy email had been sent out days before inviting the student body to the party; now all that was left was to wait for the guests.

Jon hadn't known about the shipment of Red Hawaiian Reef Lobsters that were scheduled to be delivered today, and the box wasn't properly marked. So, after opening the box, he left it to go answer his phone, not realizing that it wasn't the clown fish he thought he was getting.

When Jon made back to the stock room, the box was nearly empty and there were several dozen 5 inch red lobsters crawling around the back rooms and heading into the front.

"For cryin' out loud!"

Yes, there was going to be a lot of weird sayings and curses muttered as he attempted to catch them all. (Kinda like pokemon!)

And there was still the Now Hiring sign in the window.

It was getting to be habit. Jaina decided to stick around for a couple days because she could. She never had any idea when she'd get back here, so if she was able to get some extra time, she'd do it. This despite the thoughts that she should be pulling back from people instead, that it wouldn't be long before things got potentially really bad for her, that she shouldn't put anyone else through having to deal with that when the time came, especially if things went the way she feared they might...

Then again, she'd tried that sort of tactic before during the Vong war, and all it got her was yelled at till she stopped, so.

She was definitely trying to avoid it, though, and it wasn't anything she was willing to discuss right now. Or ever. So while she was here, she was partaking in what was also becoming habit, which was going to the Perk. She got a seat by the window, looking over her datapad yet again even though there was nothing new since she'd checked this morning, and looking for all the world like everything was fine.

[So open. Some SP while at work, but dear lord do I need distraction today. And now they're trying to make me read a manual in lieu of work]

Vincent had the diner decorated up with loads of gourds and fall leaves. They were roped into garlands along the molding, lining the display cases in little circles, and crunching under foot.

What? The man liked a good theme.

Today's specials
Butternut squash ravioli
Apple stuffed acorn squash
Pumpkin muffins

Someone was in a squashy mood, today.

Jack had noticed a lot of activity over at the hotel and discovered there was a birthday party happening. His solution: a big sign out by the front of the club:

The Devil's Nest: We Don't Care That You Were Born!

In retrospect, that was probably not the best sign ever.
