There were days to mind the shop. There were days to spend meditating. There were also days where you regret your decision to inject yourself with drugs and irradiate yourself with Gamma radiation.

Today was not that day.

Today was a repeat of the past few days where Bruce was staring at a computer screen and geeking out over the discovery of the Higgs bosun particle.

The fact that Tom and Kate were divorcing or that Ernest Borgnine was dead was of little importance to Bruce. In fact Bruce wasn't even aware of those things happening in the media.

Seriously. Higgs bosun!

Wellspring is open. You might have to work hard to get the geek's attention.

For whatever reason, today Frank arrived at work to discover the store filled with balloons.

Well, figuratively filled, anyway -- there was enough room for him to enter and make his way over to the desk, after probably inhaling an unhealthy amount of balloon-smell along the way. But there were easily a few hundred balloons in there, of every color, shape and size imaginable, and labeled for all sorts of different occasions. Even an appropriately-shaped "Happy bris!" balloon had not been spared.

He considered just going around and popping them all, but in the meantime, they looked pretty festive. So Frank just took a few of them outside and stationed them near the doorway to make the store look a little more welcoming, then moved the remaining ones around to just keep them out of the aisles.

There. Problem solved.

The fruit bowl at the front desk was filled with dog biscuits today. One of the housekeepers had found a Newfoundland puppy unattended in a guest room, so Mary was keeping the puppy with her at the front desk. She appreciated the company. Also, the puppy seemed to be pretty handy at keeping Gunther in line.

Last week, Sam had been in the company of a snake. This week, he was in the company of a ghost. But, this wasn't a ghost that disturbed his sleep. This was Brooke, one of the few ghosts he liked having around. Currently, she was sitting beside him, behind the counter, watching him do some boring paperwork.

"This is boring."

"I know," Sam said, glancing over at her. "Gotta do it though. My job."

"Get a new job," Brooke joked, smirking. "Oooh, join the circus with your zombie raising self!"

Sam raised an eyebrow at her and shook his head. "No."

For a second, Brooke was quiet and then asked, "What are you going to do once the summer's up?"

And then it was Sam's turn to be quiet. He didn't wanna think about that too much right now. Or at all. So instead, he avoided the question.

"Maybe joining the circus isn't such a bad idea at all."

[Open store! For most (including radio squirrels), it's gonna look like Sam was talking to the air. Brooke's visible if you're near Sam, though.]

Technically, Emma had left New Amsterdam less than an hour ago to catch her portal to Fandom for work (and to give Jack some space).

Somehow she had ended up time-shifted in a phase dimension waiting for a layover for nine linear hours - for her - only to arrive in Fandom an hour before she had left the New Amsterdam Portalocity Center.

If she got stuck again on her way back, someone might die.

Dite's was open, but the shop-girl was occasionally napping in the back room.

"Today," Emma said, once everyone who was coming had trailed in, "We will be discussing the place from whence many psionic abilites draw power; the astral plane."

"Academically speaking, the astral plane, also called the astral world or the psychic plane, is a plane of existence postulated by classical - particularly neo-Platonic - medieval and esoteric philosophies and mystery-oriented religions. It is the world of the planetary spheres, crossed by the soul in its astral body on the way to being born and after death, and generally said to be populated by angels, spirits or other immaterial beings. In the late 19th and early 20th century the term was popularised by Theosophy and neo-Rosicrucianism. The Barzakh, olam mithal or intermediate world in Islam and the "World of Yetzirah" in Lurianic Qabala are related concepts."

"In my world, the the astral plane is a metaphorical level of existence with ties to the physical world which only psychic entities, or those with magical abilities, can visit. Some say it is an alternate universe in an equivalent space to our own, where all matter is composed of ectoplasm. On the astral plane, the life energies and consciousnesses of other beings are discernible to adepts. Powerful psychics and sorcerers can manipulate the astral plane to their wishes, while those not yet well-versed in the workings of the place can find themselves trapped for eternity." Cheerful, Emma. Not.

"The trick to remember with the astral plane is that your mind defines your reality. It manifests itself differently to everyone, and every single one of you has a connection to it by having a consciousness. Should you ever find yourself there, remember that; your mind defines your reality. If you believe something is true, it will be true, and like Dorothy, you can wish your way home if your will is great enough."
