Gert was in the mood for a quiet day today, so it was good that the kitchen staff seemed intent on doing their own experiments with food well away from her. In fact, when she entered the kitchen to grab something, they promptly shushed each other and waited for her to leave before continuing whatever they were doing in a huddle around the stove.

A thudding bass beat with some girl wailing over it greeted Jack when he got to the club today.

Wanna be a victim
Ready for abduction

When he looked around, he realized the song matched the decor: Silver flying saucers hung from the rafters, and posters reading I WANT TO BELIEVE and ROSWELL had been stuck to the walls. And Tiny's t-shirt had little green men all over it.

Jack was almost certain this was insulting to someone's culture, but he decided to keep that opinion to himself.

The Perk, Monday Afternoon

Okay, so Kathy's first class hadn't been what people would consider a raging success. How were you supposed to handle multiple students--including the class TA--telling you to run away while you still could? She'd think it was one more way of hazing the newbies, but everything else she'd dismissed as a hoax was turning out to be true.

Also, it was hot and sticky as balls out here. Well, metaphorical balls. She presumed. Maybe hot and sticky as the underside of boobs? You know, this metaphor wasn't going anywhere good. Probably a sign of incipient heatstroke. Kathy wasn't sure what she'd been thinking, walking into town like this. She probably should have just gone back to her dorm and started looking up airfare prices home. Nice, safe, boring, overprotective home.

She ordered an iced coffee, then sprawled out on a table, looking at her life. Looking at her choices. Wondering if everything she'd seen so far was actually an advanced case of heatstroke.

Well, after his class with Ender (...woo), Cade was back in his usual place on Mondays: napping behind the counter at Stark's.

Hey, as long as he collected a paycheck it was all good, right?

He was too busy snoozing to notice the floor was slowly filling up with blackberries. Ooops.

The Preserve, Monday Evening

Old Lace was hunting, and Gert was... well, Gert was sitting against a tree and playing with her phone.

Normally Gert took Old Lace out for walks during the day, because being in the woods at night was creepy, but given how unforgivably and disgustingly hot it was today, she'd put it off until evening, figuring that it would be a little cooler. It was still pretty muggy and disgusting, but at least not to the extent that she wanted to dump her water bottle on her head.

While Gert was engaged in a pretty intense game of Tetris (that was about as advanced as cell phone games got on phones from 2003), Old Lace took down a few squirrels, and just as Gert thought she was about ready to call it a night, she found herself suddenly caught in a spray of what seemed to be deer blood, judging by how much there was of it.

"Ugh, OL," she called, annoyed. "Keep enough distance that I don't get splattered. I already showered once today."
