The Beach; Sunday Afternoon [07/01].
Sunday, July 1st, 2018 10:40 amThere were a lot of things about this place that Astrid disliked. Weird classmates, weird classes, weird teachers. There were little green monsters that made you crazier if they bit you and a bastardized Billy Bass that was barely even recognizable as such that they were expected to want to win. But the worst of it, she'd decided, had to be the fact that the pool was inside.
Sure, it made sense. They actually had real winters here, they had to build it as part of a castle, they were surrounded by beautiful ocean. But you couldn't just drift in the ocean, not like she used to at the apartment pool back home with her mom, all day, hours on end, in the hot summer sun with cool drinks in their hands, despite it being against the complex's rules.
She did drift out in the ocean for a little bit, sure, but you couldn't just relax when you had to worry about waves and tides and the endless horizon. She got a good swim in, and then she could just sit at the shore, digging her toes into the wet sand, turning her face to the hot sun and closing her eyes, pretending she was still in California, that her mother would be coming back for her at any moment.
