white_oleander: (by the pool)

There were a lot of things about this place that Astrid disliked. Weird classmates, weird classes, weird teachers. There were little green monsters that made you crazier if they bit you and a bastardized Billy Bass that was barely even recognizable as such that they were expected to want to win. But the worst of it, she'd decided, had to be the fact that the pool was inside.

Sure, it made sense. They actually had real winters here, they had to build it as part of a castle, they were surrounded by beautiful ocean. But you couldn't just drift in the ocean, not like she used to at the apartment pool back home with her mom, all day, hours on end, in the hot summer sun with cool drinks in their hands, despite it being against the complex's rules.

She did drift out in the ocean for a little bit, sure, but you couldn't just relax when you had to worry about waves and tides and the endless horizon. She got a good swim in, and then she could just sit at the shore, digging her toes into the wet sand, turning her face to the hot sun and closing her eyes, pretending she was still in California, that her mother would be coming back for her at any moment.

The good thing about knowing how much time she had here was that it gave Rey a chance to do certain things before it became a problem. Like figuring out how she was going to charge her phone in a place where that wasn't normally an option. So this was a project she was working on when she didn't have other things to do.

This was going to get some trial and error here.

The Perk - Sunday

spectre_alenko: Kaidan looking pensive (pensive)

Still bothered by his discussion with Seivarden, Kaidan headed to the Perk on Sunday. Observing the cashiers while he waited in line, he didn't see anything that could be considered less than pleasant, prompt service. A few people even ordered tea, though he couldn't hear if anyone had ordered it loose.

When his turn came, he was greeted cheerfully, "Looking for a different flavored coffee?" "No, thank you. It's Canada Day, so I'm ordering tea. Could you tell me what you have available loose leaf for tea?" Kaidan asked politely with a small thoughtful frown at the beverage list. It just said 'tea' and gave a hot or cold option. The cashier chirped helpfully, "Sure! Right now, we have a spiced Rooibos, Earl Grey in a white tip, a chamomile/peppermint blend, an Asamushi Sencha, Lychee flavored black tea, and a roasted green Mate. Anything sound good?"

Well, that didn't clear anything up. Kaidan nodded, "Sure, could I please have the roasted green Mate, iced?" He apologized, "It's already too warm out for hot tea." "Not a problem," the cashier assured him as he paid.

Standing off to the side, he watched curiously as they made his tea. The mate was scooped out of a can and placed in a fiber tea bag. Scalding but not boiling water was added for the steep. It sat a few minutes, and the barista explained, "We added more leaf to make it strong, so it won't dilute too much when we pour it over the ice." Which he did as he said it, stirring vigorously to chill the liquid before the ice diluted. He handed it over with a smile. "There you go." "Thank you," Kaidan replied with a smile, dropping a few dollars in the tip jar.

He claimed a seat at an empty table, turning things over in his mind. They sold loose leaf tea, but put it into fiber sacs - maybe that was Seivarden's problem? There'd been no rudeness; they'd gone above and beyond for polite, friendly service. Something was off.

"I don't want to know what the hell it is you've just done to the pancakes, do I?"

The cook gave Kanan a big, innocent smile, and then attempted to shove a bowl of some manner of slop at him, a hopeful look in his eye.

"No. I'm really not going to eat that."

"But it's festive!"

"It's not my holiday." Kanan paused. "It's not even a holiday here, is it?"

"You threw gravy, cheese, and meat on a pancake. It looks like a mess."

The cook just sulked.
