Alec Hardison was a genius. A real, honest, smarter-than-most-geniuses genius. It was hard to remember that on this island, where a lot of people were smarter-than-most-geniuses geniuses, and most of them had the advanced degrees and/or fancy future tech to prove it. But some days...

...Some days Hardison got a chance to remind everyone how smart he really was.

Days like today, when he was lounging in the hottest pool in the onsen. Due to all the hot springs, the ambient temperature of the onsen was almost ten degrees warmer than anywhere else on the island. He'd rigged up a winterized awning to keep the worst of the wind off of him, he had several vacuum-sealed bags of meat and veggies tucked around to cook sous vide (thanks for teaching him that one, Eliot!), and a supersoaker filled with hot water to keep any rampaging snow monsters at a distance.

Look, he absolutely appreciated the setup at the community center. He did! But sometimes you just wanted to kick back in a natural hot tub, cooking a steak dinner and playing on your phone, which was safely stuck inside another vacuum-sealed bag.

Hmmm. He could probably rig up a geothermal charger while he was out here...

Kanan had a lightsaber in one hand and a blaster in the other.

Kanan could be back in the Ghost, enjoying a shielded ship with power and heating and hot caf. But no, he was out here, wearing the heaviest coat he had and a smile on his face as he carved through snowmen, using this as his training exercise for the day.

They were attacking the island, he felt very few compunctions about cutting them down with superheated plasma in the name of training, no. A slash of his lightsaber here, a few headshots from his blaster as another contingent of snowmen rounded the corner... reducing these things to slush was actually somewhat cathartic. So, no, Kanan wasn't in the warehouse today. But that didn't mean he wasn't getting his lightsaber work in. Not at all.

And today he'd even left the dog on the ship. Sorry, buddy.

There's good and bad news!

The good news is that the snow has finally stopped sometime around 3 in the morning.

The bad news is that it dumped about two feet of snow, more where the wind pushed it into drifts, so there's snow up to everyone's mid-thighs out there, and the temperature was hovering at a balmy 15 degrees Fahrenheit (-9 C!). The other bit of bad news is that the snow monsters were now out in much larger groups of five to ten, roaring and waving their signs about climate change.

Which led to the final bit of bad news: the huge glacier floating off the coast of Galactica Point, absolutely teeming with more snow monsters who seemed very determined to take the island over.

So it's mostly bad news, then.

Steve had managed to scrounge up oatmeal for everyone from somewhere and the slightly lumpy bowl of it was bubbling over the fire and probably killing a part of Hannibal's soul. His mother, God love her, had lied and told him that the lumps were the best part because she had also been a terrible cook.

He turned around to take in the scene in the community center, then peeked out the door and saw the masses of snow and the dramatic increase in snow monsters. "Okay, everyone!" he called. "Don't go outside unless absolutely necessary. It's cold and dangerous. If you need something or know of someone who should be brought in here, talk to me, Liam, or Rosa."

Because of course Steve would be going out in the cold. He was That Guy.

It would not be an easy task; this, Sidon knew. But he also knew, undeniably, that he couldn't expect Prompto to hold down the fort, as it were, by himself, for a prolonged period of time. So though he knew it would difficult and brutal, he at least had time to prepare himself, to bundle up, to strap a pack of needed supplies to his back and grab his weapons before leaving the warmth of the dormitory fires and heading out to ensure that his friend received some well-earned and much needed relief. He stuck to the edges of the island, figuring that he could always plunge into the water to escape these strange, tiny, softened snow taluses if he needed to, but thankfully, his momentum, his speed, his incredible jumps, and a few well executed swings of his sword and stabs with his trident managed to clear his way well enough until he rushed into the warm glow of the corridor of heat lamps and heavy bags leading to the shelter's generator.

Prompto had been even busier since yesterday, it seemed, narrowing the passage to ensure only one snowmonster could get very far into it at a time, try as they might to tear it down, since the path was now dotted with small piles of their coal eyes and their stick arms burning slightly to slow them down with melting and maybe give them second thoughts unless they, too, wanted the remaining parts of their melted bodies added to the fires.

Needless to say, Prompto was more than a little surprised to see Sidon ducking under the blankets he'd throw up to keep the snow off and the heat in. "Sidon! What the hell, man? You shouldn't be out there!"

"So it's a good thing," he said, shivering still despite the warmth thankfully creeping back into him, "that I am not out there anymore! And I should think that you shouldn't be out here alone, either."

"I got it handled, dude!" Prompto insisted. "You really shouldn't have taken the risk."

"And what about sleep, Prompto?" Sidon asked pointedly. "What about food? Were you intending to just stand guard the whole time and deprive yourself of rest and sustenance until this whole thing blows over? Goddess only knows how long that shall be! You'll need respite and repast if you're too be in any sort of fighting shape, after all, and so I'm here to provide it. I've brought food, more blankets, and my weapons. You need to eat, and take a break."

Prompto made a little bit of a face, because he knew Sidon was right, and he was really, really glad for it because he honestly did feel about ready to drop off into sleep if it weren't for his rumbly tummy keeping him up, but he was still going to roll his eyes a little bit at the lecture. "Yeah, okay, Mom."

Which was...ironic, because Sidon had just kind of shown Prompto more attention in that moment than he usually ever got from his mom, but whatever. They got Sidon set up inside the fort around the generator, got some food in Prompto before sending him inside to get some sleep all cuddled up with puppies (which was kind of the best break ever), and once he was rested up, they both stood watch over the entrance, taking the snowmen to task whenever a few of them managed to get through the gauntlet, patching up what they managed to tear down, and then they worked out a schedule between the two of them so they could take turns making sure they were well rested and ready to go, idly chatting in the downtime while Prompto occasionally spritzed Sidon down from a spray bottle so that the heat lamps didn't wind up drying him out too much.

It was most unfortunate that they had to deal with these circumstances in the first place, but, all things considered, though it was at times harrowing and worrisome and terribly uncomfortable, it could easily be a lot worse, and the animals were still safe, and that was what mattered.

Hernando was a little tired. They had worked in shifts through the night again to keep the snow clear. It had finally stopped. By the time he made it out of bed, showered and headed into the store, Kaidan had cleared the doorway of the final drift and, Hernando noted, also cleared the sidewalk back in the direction of town.

Stifling a yawn, he set out pastries. Instead of taking a position behind the counter he made himself a cup of coffee and went to lounge in one of the comfy chairs by the fireplace.

Dave hopped up into his lap. This surprised Hernando a little. The quokka still looked grumpy but seemed to be seeking affection so Hernando tentatively began stroking his fur.

The sign was still in the window.

T42 is Open!
Come in!
The fire is warm, the tea is hot.
There is also cocoa.
We still don't recommend the coffee.

Small candle lanterns hung from delicate chains. The colored glass added a festive glow. Hopefully the light would guide people in from the cold.

Kanan was out having fun with the snowmen, so Hera was back at the ship, making sure hers and all the others were safe from them. Chopper was behind the aft gun, having far too much fun, Stance was sitting staring at the hatch like that would make Kanan get back faster, and Hera was making sure there was plenty of starship fuel coffee for when he got back or if anybody else came by.

Kanan had been inviting half the island apparently, which was fine with Hera, as long as they understood that once the bunks were gone, the common area and cargo room floor were it.

It was bitterly cold, and dark and that last snow monster had clocked Steve in the head with a placard hard enough to have him see stars. He staggered back into the community center, shaking it off.

"Everyone okay in here? Warm enough?"
