lilac_eyed_lieutenant: (chin lift intrigue)

Expecting a quiet day, as usual, Tisarwat had made herself some tea, put on some classical music in the style of what she imagined Lucille would play at her piano, and settled behind the counter with the book Lucille had lent her the other day. It had been a while since she really settled in to read an actual book, so she expected it would be a light way to pass the time between the rare customer and sips of tea.

She supposed she shouldn't be surprised that the density of the language pulled her in immediately, and the story itself ensured her entrapment. She barely even noticed her tea going cold, caught up in this tale of a briiliant mind disgusted by what he has created, and the frustration and anger and devistation of a creature dismissed and shunned by that which gave it life. It was not difficult at all, after all, to draw parallels between this story and the duality of her own mind, one part of her all too familiar with the anguish and fear of the doctor faces with what he had created, and the other sympathetic and guilty for the misery of the so-called monster...

The whole thing was going to give her a terrible headache later, and make her incredibly awkward around her roommate, but for now, she was just drawn in by the story, almost forgetting entirely that she was technically supposed to be working...

Jesse had given walking up and down the Causeway a spirited try yesterday, but after a few attempts accomplished little, she'd let it go. Town Hall it was, though the phones there didn't give her much of a reprieve, either.

By the time she was done reading all the files an overenthusiastic Nina kept giving her, it was late. And so she'd bunked up on a couch in a back office, and she was now waking up with an unfortunately familiar case of back pain.

Something was ringing.

She groaned and sat up. Is that...?

It was the phone, an old 90s model sitting on the desk in front of her. Nobody ever comes in here, huh? Explains the cobwebs. She snatched it off the desk and pressed it to her ear. )

"Breakfast!" Nina bellowed. "You want some breakfast?"

I am a little hungry.

She tugged on her jacket and stepped out into the front office with a wry smile. "What've you got for me?"

The Mayor was in.

Every once in a while, when it was slow, Kitty and Tino started experimenting by seeing what new drinks they could come up with. Tonight was once in those whiles. The bartop was a little more cluttered with things they were using a lot, and the dishes tonight were going to be really annoying but that was a problem for later.

Right now the problem was Kitty having to say, "You cannot put Midori in every drink."

She had your back, patrons.

Lucifer was on a roll.

Well, it was a roll currently less than 48 hours long, prolonged by the batch of candy-flavored liquors the bar had just received. Lucifer had instructed Tiny on making unicorn-colored cocktails that tasted primarily like sugar.

So... it might be more of a sugar rush than a roll, really.

At least it meant the music coming out of his piano tonight was decidedly, maybe overly, chipper.

Steve had never had to deal directly with the public in the course of his long career, first in Navy intelligence, and then in a task force that got its cases directly from the governor or from out-of-their-depth police divisions at the Honolulu Police Department.

Two hours into his first shift in the Fandom Trooper Station and he was half-seriously wondering if he could just...never answer the phone again.

"Yes, ma'am," he said, spinning around in his chair. "Yes. Yes. Yes."

Long, long pause.

"Well, I'm not really sure having an enormous pile of rotten turnips in his front yard really is a criminal matter. Perhaps you should try town hall? I could try to transfer you there now. I'm new, though, so I'm not really up to speed on the phone system. I'm going to try my best--transferring now."

And then he hung up.

Steve was a problem solver.

Astrid had not exactly been the best about actually going to work this session, which was entirely to blame for the fact that she wound up with a swimming class prior to her shift, and once she got in the water, it was sometimes very hard to convince herself to get out, even after the class was over. But today she had gotten out, having some new and uncertain reasons for not wanting to linger for a change, and she also had some new postcards to try to sell at the shop, and a reminder that she was actually trying to make some money to hopefully afford a lawyer...

But as she set up the box on the counter, this time with all the various villagers from the last week in the hope that someone might feel a little nostalgic for them and that they wouldn't have minded, now that they were all gone, that there was some girl in a flower shop trying to sell their likenesses, she wondered if she should consider a place with more foot traffic than the flower shop that hardly anyone ever went to except for major floral holidays.

Maybe she should consider talking to Summer about getting her job at Turtle & Canary back, too...

Either way, for now, it was selling flowers, and trying to sell postcards of adorable animals, and jacking up the prices on her K.K. Slider sketches because she had a feeling those would be the most popular.
