Now that Diego had a shred of hope after talking to Five this week, he could focus more on his actual job. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be much going on at his actual job. Nary a Bee Lady call to be had.

But! He was ready should anything actually happen. For right now he was going to be a cliché cop eating a donut at his desk.

Around the Island - Saturday

Billy stood on the deck of the small houseboat as it floated in the calm waters of Serenity Cove. Taking a slow drag on the cigarette that was held loosely between his fingers, Billy breathed out slowly, the thin cloud lingering around his head for a moment before being swept away by the breeze. Turning his head, he gazed out over the waters and towards the island as a flock of seagulls flew overhead, cawing angrily at him as they passed.

“Stupid flying rats,” Billy muttered as he jumped slightly at the sound.

As he watched the birds fly towards the shore a short distance away, Billy pushed up from the railing he had been leaning against and ran a hand through his mess of wild black hair. His stomach growled loudly, reminding him just how long it had been since he had had something halfway decent to eat. Shaking his head, Billy headed back inside to get ready for his first real venture onto the mysterious island he had found himself at.

The good part about this morning was that nobody was hungover.

The bad part was that apparently the busboy had decided it was a perfect day to play chess. Using the squares of the floor. And gremlins.

Miguel was staying far back behind the counter in the event of sore losers. Or sore pieces. Or...look, just don't sit on that side of the diner, okay?

The moths were gone. That was a relief, and Lucille opened the shop as usual, watered the plants and noticed there were quite a few orders for flower arrangements. Wasting no time, she got to work and by lunchtime she was halfway through them.

She had tea and sandwiches, out of habit wearing gloves while eating them, despite her Radchaai roommate not being around. It was a pleasant day. In the afternoon two crows settled on the windowsill, staring through the glass with black, beady eyes, making it more comforting..

So. One week ago, Eliot had been literally haunting a library. A week and a day ago, he'd been suddenly blinded by his best friend as she severed his connection to an eldritch fear entity. He had -- quite appropriately, he felt -- spent the week at the bottom of some of his favorite bottles. But a week was plenty of time to recover from either trauma, right? And he had a quest assigned to him by a magic cock -- in a far less fun way than he might have preferred -- so he needed to get his shit together and not cock this shit up.

So . . . he was in the cafe. Surfing through search results for "quest for magic" on his phone. Sipping an entirely unspiked coffee.

Ugh. Research was the worst. Why couldn't he just buy the answer to this with nipple clamps like he had the answers to his Arabic final in school?
