Detention, The Gig, 8 Am to 2 PM, Saturday

Dani was waiting out front with a list of the students who had to report to detention. The door to the barn was open, and just inside, there was a wheelbarrow and an assortment of pitchforks visible.

"Good morning. My name is Miss Davis and I've been asked to oversee your detention today," she began. "You're going to help me give The Gig a top-to-bottom cleaning. I'm sorry to say that you are going to get very, very dirty in the process." She went on to explain the basics of mucking out horse stalls, cleaning tack, and grooming horses.

"I've provided gloves and rubber work boots for you, and I suggest you change put them on before you begin," added Dani. "And just a word of warning, folks. If any of you brought steel-toe boots thinking that would protect your feet from getting stepped on by a horse, forget it. When a 1000 lb animal steps on a steel toe, that steel is going to give way and bend under the weight, and it won't bounce back afterwards. Your precious little toes are still going to be stuck underneath it."

Satisfied that she had sufficiently scared the students, Dani led them into the stable to get to work.

Ned was still a little tired from lost sleep but he figured that getting into work and baking some would help him out in that respect. It was a change from his urgent, stress filled baking of last week. He was even able to ignore the rest of the staff when they started flinging dough at each other in a fit of boredom.

He hadn't been in to the store for a while, being too preoccupied with potty training Jan's education. On Saturday, Tether wound up barking at the door until Cable opened it, and he skittered down the stairs in that doglike way that portrayed real enthusiasm.

As by miracle, Cable's phone rang at the same time, and so by the time mid-morning had hit, he was trying to soothe Jan on one leg while soothing Irene by use of the phone.

"Just get Ben Haraz in," he advised, "He'll know what's up..."

"Easy for you to say. I'm hip-deep in angry Rumeki! Um... figure of speech."

"It's all a matter of PR, Irene... and letting the people know that it's being taken care of. Don't dismiss their opinion, either. Between you and Haraz, you should be able to make for a good compromise."

Deep breath. "I miss you, you know."

"It'll work out fine, Irene. Just follow the steps; I have faith in you."

It would seem that sleepiness had a delayed effect on Turtle; either that, or she was up too late with radio, plus the whole fire drill thing, adding up to her feeling a little groggy at work. She considered getting herself some coffee, but coffee still tasted gross to her, and she was settling in with what she figured might be the only redeamable form of coffee.

One would think that having a projecting in helping Irulan decorate her new place would give Charlotte plenty of things to get her mind off the wedding, but noooooo, of course it didn't! She had made some progress in some designs and tracking down a few things she was looking for, but the all powerful call of the Internet had her occasionally locking down at her computer, searching in on a few sights in Connecticut, close to where she grew up, for location.

This wedding was sneaking up on her way too fast!

And yet, oddly enough, at the same time? Not nearly fast enough.

Sigh.
