The whole thing was entirely fascinating, really.

Angua sat at her desk, leaning back in her chair with her arms folded in front of her. She was listening, with rather impressive patience, to the ministrations of two tiny rodents that stood on the paperwork. She couldn't understand a single thin they were trying to say to her, but she gathered the general idea of it. The squirrel was absolutely livid because the chipmunk had stolen her nut. The chipmunk insisted that the squirrel had threatened her based on her position with the radio station, and it wasn't her nut at all.

Frankly, Angua felt they were both off their nut entirely.

"Listen," she finally said, holding out a hand to stop the bickering before leaning forward on her folded arms on the desk. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but the nut probably came from a tree in either the park or the preserve, which are public lands. Those nuts are anyone's nuts. Anyone can just go out there and grab them, and if you leave your nuts where someone else can grab them, then it's your own fault for not protecting them better. It's really a little bit ridiculous to get all caught up on a single nut, when there are thousands out there, most of them probably better than the nut in question here. Besdies, there are people out there in the world who get by just fine without any nuts at all."

They turned their beady rodent eyes toward Angua a bit dubiously, then looked at each other and sighed. They shrugged, conceded to her the point, and scurried off, leaving Angua to wonder if she seriously just said what she thought she did.

Considering the fact that Ralph looked like he was trying not to titter as he handed her the form to file the claim, yeah, she probably did.

The lot near the community center was bustling with activity this morning. Despite the holiday being yesterday, everyone was awake and not showing any signs of being too full, too burned on fireworks or too hungover. That was a good thing since today, there were trees being put in.

Several small flowering trees were situated away from the lot, waiting to be planted. There were landscapers tending to the ground and digging the holes and it was up to those working the project today to get the trees planted and situated. It would be strenuous work but ultimately rewarding.

So a new picnic had come to pass? Maybe Jane needed to start visiting those, at least for the sake of having something to do. And there was food, which was always a plus. She was still working on her social life, but granted, she wasn't particularly good about that whole deal just yet. Well, she had time. More than she was probably aware of, but time none the less. And while she was getting at it, the work on her sketch was starting to resemble the mansion. Some days of work and she would have the base to start putting some color into it. Joy.

A new term, a new day on the job, and a shop that seemed - for once - blissfully free of anything fruit-related. No amount of inspections netted Ender anything that as much as looked squishy, red, green, yellow, or edible. Every machine was running at top performance.

With a slow sigh, Ender went back to his desk, and set up his laptop. He sank down in his chair--

-- and heard something go squish.

He sighed again, loudly this time, rubbed at his forehead, and muttered a creative curse the likes of which people didn't usually manage to catch him making. Then he gingerly removed the cherry tomatoes from his seat.

Sigh.

Alex opened the store on time, armed with iced coffee and pastries. Since there were new people on the island, she decided to do a quick run through of the store and make sure everything was in order.

Once she was satisfied everything was in top shape, Alex settled behind the counter with her coffee, pastries and a spell book. Time to try and learn some new spells before her afternoon workshop.

The Magic Box's open!

Lacey'd spent most of the fourth of July on the phone with the boys back in Dog River, which meant she'd gotten treated to an extensive (really, really extensive) and misinformed (grossly, grossly misinformed) diatribe from Hank on why exactly Americans set off fireworks on the Fourth. Hank's version, for the record, involved dud firecrackers from Canada Day that somehow ended up over the border, someone discovering them and attempting to light them, and this all logically (really!) leading to an explanation of why their fireworks celebrations were inferior.

At least, Lacey thought that was what he was leading up to before she'd hung up on him.

And maybe just for that, just to spite him, she'd do the diner up in a red, white, and blue theme today. So there.

Today's Specials
Double-Dipped Buttermilk Fried Chicken

. . . okay, she might have failed the theme there on that last special, but shh.

Luke's is open and, belatedly, a little bit holiday-themed? Maybe?

[OOC: OCD's going to the beach, because my brain is seriously on vacation today and this post took me three hours to write. I am not going to the beach, but I do have errands to run so SP is gonna be the thing.]

There were new kids on the island. Ash wondered how they were adjusting. She probably should have stopped by the picnic since she was going to be teaching (and wouldn't that make Henry laugh?) but she had been busy with other things and lost track of time.

Today she was testing all of the gym equipment to ensure it worked properly.

As Price was now teaching a workshop on Fridays, he'd changed shifts at Wellspring. Today he was on duty, wearing simple slacks and a button down shirt. Incredibly casual for him, really, but he was trying something new.

He was trying to 'switch off', as it were. Trying to be more of a man, and less of a soldier.

It wasn't working so well. He felt uncomfortable in these clothes. He'd be grateful for a visitor or distraction.

Didi spent most of the morning trying to convince Apu that his calender wasn't wrong, and she really had switched her workday to Mondays for the rest of the summer.

Once he'd finally quieted down about that, it was time to put together a sales display of the leftover 4th of July stuff. She held back a few boxes of sprinklers for her own use, before making a sign:

50% Off All Fireworks!
15% Off Everything for Newbies!

Squishy flavors: Raspberry, Pineapple. Blueberry

Monday found Gunn back at work and while there was probably plenty of paid work to be done, Gunn was busy putting some of the finishing touches on his diorama from Home Ec.

Which included various traps for a certain type of undead.

Well, Aquaman didn't say it had to be a "happy" diorama.

Dani had a fancy new "Help Wanted" sign. She spent a while outside, trying to figure out how best to put it up. She decided it should be nailed to the outside wall near the entrance, but that required nails and a hammer. Dani was about to call around to see if someone could do that for her. After a few minutes, though she realized it would be cheaper if she did it herself. She spent the next few hours searching the barn top to bottom for a hammer. When she found one, she realized that she hadn't found any nails.

In the end, the sign was left propped up on the ground outside the barn, and Dani had a trip to the hardware store on her to do list for tomorrow. She had more important things to get done today, like feeding the horses.

Mini-Morton was back at his 'post' at Dite's again, beeping at Little Strife, the cash register. Whatever they were discussing was unintelligible to anyone else, but they seemed to be enjoying it.

In addition to his usual duties in the store, Mini-Morton had been given a most important responsibility today. In his possession, to be given to 'Dite as soon as he saw her (or left in a prominent location), was an envelope addressed to her in Karla's loopy scrawl.

Unsurprisingly, it was made out to 'Dite )

Adrian had spent the week as a gerbil.

A gerbil.

Tonight he was back to normal, and thank god. And if he was smoking and drinking more than usual, it had nothing to do with keeping crazy at bay, and everything to do with the fact that he had opposable thumbs again.

When you had too much time on your hands, Angela was finding that you could only take so much time out on the beach, and in order to split that an air conditioned coffee shop was a great place to spend a little of that time. Iced coffee, since it was still way too hot out for anything warm, but it still counted.

And she had some plans to make. Which she should have made a few weeks ago, but was getting to now, jotting down ideas of places she could stop in and where they might have jobs going.

There was possibly still more idle doodling, coffee drinking, and muffin eating happening than there was job finding...

[[I am slightly more organised than her. Very slightly. And the post is open like an open coffee shop tends to be.]]

Irulan found a very nice article on hats and wanted to share it. Irulan negotiated with the Infernal Machine (it disturbed Irulan that she was getting used to this machine) only to discover she required another machine to print the article.

Irulan had an internal deliberation until she finally decided to send out her servant to purchase the much needed but still suspicious machine. There was more confusion about how it worked and just before frustration got the better of Irulan's Bene Gesserit training, the machines finally did their jobs and printed the article.

Now there was a framed article on How to Wear Summer Hats on the table display near the entrance.

It was always good to share information. But sometimes the path to sharing information brought more peril and confusion than she bargained for.
