The drive over to Fandom (no, not across the country – from the airport where he'd met up with his car again) had had something of a soothing effect on Jackson. Somewhat. Not a lot. He was still pretty pissed that he'd been sent here in the first place, but at least he'd managed to get the scowl off his face for now.

Of course, parking his Porsche and getting out to take a look at the view of the island had him raising a critical eyebrow.

It may have looked like Mary was hard at work on the front desk computer, but she was actually checking out TMZ to see if any more nude pictures of Prince Harry had turned up. She could imagine that security staff at all the Las Vegas properties were in overdrive trying to find better ways to protect the privacy of their high-profile guests. Of course, no one was better than Danny and Big Ed, who even managed to hide a senator from the press right on the casino floor. Still, it was no longer a certainty that what happened in Las Vegas would stay in Las Vegas.

April had had a very weird day.

She'd driven a bus -- badly -- and dealt with teenagers, and then later in the afternoon she'd been accosted by a pink pony claiming to be her buddy. By the time she got to the bar, when Tino opened his mouth to babble about the Perk girl and her new haircut, April was forced to take drastic measures.

"The girl at the Perk has two weeks to live," she informed him. "So you'd better get out of here and go see her. Like now."

Tiny would... Look, do you really need anyone to spell out what would happen if you walked up to the guy in the sleeveless leather vest, looked his kneecap in the face, and asked why he was wearing a moose-antler hat?

Aside from Bo snickering; that one was a given. She was doing that anyway, though. She would just snicker louder if she got to watch Tiny drop-kick some suicidal idiot out the door.

Fandom Island Gazette, Saturday

Carl was sitting on the stoop outside the Gazette building today. He'd heard that there were new students and teachers coming into town today and he wanted to make sure they had a chance to know about the town paper. And where to go if they had any tips on big stories.

Which seemed to be lacking in this town. Maybe he needed to make something happen?

Hmm. His reporter instincts hadn't failed him before, so he'd give it a while. Meanwhile, he had a Dear Aunt Fannie letter to read and respond to.

Dear Aunt Fannie, I have been hearing cannons lately and no one else seems to notice. The other day I heard howling, too, but it was from far away. I'm very sensative to these things and I am sure that we are about to be invaded by ghost civil war soldiers; the howling is obviously my animal totem spirit trying to warn me. This all makes sense when you remember that this is the state where the civil war first shed American blood and the first attempt to assasinate President Lincoln occurred. And I am sure you have noticed the release of that movie? About the Civil War? Every copy of my cable guide that talks about that movie has dog teeth marks in it, and I only have cats. This is all coming together as a prophecy and I am sure I am being used as a warning. I think if you printed my letter, other people would become enlightened and we may be able to prevent another attempt by the Southern rebels to destroy this nation.
