somethingwithturquoise: (doubtful summer is doubtful)
[personal profile] somethingwithturquoise
When Summer was in the middle of processing a shipment to get ready to go on the shelves that day, she came across something she would have absolutely never have expected and, quite frankly, due to the topical nature of its specificity, was immediately suspicious of.

Because there had somehow managed to be a case of duct tape in the order.

Granted, it was far from the first time an order that Summer knew she hadn't put in herself (and she knew none of the other employees had, either), but the fact that she was literally just talking about duct tape on Saturday had more than a few paranoia bells sounding off in her head.

After a thorough investigation, though, everything seemed...fine? So in addition to the usual newbie discount sign that would doubtless be edited increasingly as the week end on, as was tradition, there was something else to add:

Welcome to Turtle & Canary!
Now with Duct Tape!

"But Summer," said a voice behind her as she put that up, and she turned around to find Apu standing there, stock still, staring at her with wide eyes that didnt' blink as he spoke, "there has always been duct tape at Turtle & Canary."

"Ohhh...kaaaaay," said Summer slowly, "creepy. And also? Demonstrably false...but whatever you say, Apu."

Like she was going to argue with him when he was clearly going through a Thing right now. She was just going to avoid him and try not to think about the duct tape thing too much any more, at least not until she went to put whatever didn't fit on the shelves away in the back room....where she found herself nearly buried under an absolute avalanche of boxes and cases filled with duct tape, as if every single order for it that had been attempted and failed to be made over the years had finally managed to make it through the pipeline.

"What. The hell."

Having successfully managed to prove to Bee Lady that the indie honey being sold at Turtle & Canary was in fact legit enough to be sold there (and, let's be honest, there were meat flavored squishies there, who was really going to be that concerned if a brand of honey wasn't quite up to snuff?), Rosa figured that would be the end of it, and it would be a blissfully long time before she'd have to deal with Bee Lady again.

Rosa, of course, would be wrong.

"Is it really a missing person's report if it's a bee?"

So that should keep them busy for a while.

Diaz & Ass. is open!

Despite this being a construction class, today they were in one of the community center rooms, with tables set up with plenty of graph paper, white boards, and pencils and pens (in all sorts of colours). There was also coffee, tea, and hot chocolate available to drink, should anyone want it, since it was an evening class and people had to come down to the community center for it.

Actually, the hot drinks were going to be a thing all semester because… well. They'd be building. Outside. At night.

Nina herself had an apple cider. Teacher's privilege.

It's not a Nina class if it doesn't start off with a cut! )

"Once we've been informed as to who everyone is this semester, we'll begin with the very first step of the process of building our new home: designing it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Annie was still reading that crappy vampire book from last week - which was a shame, because she had recently become aware of a way more interesting-sounding book that she was never, under any circumstance going to read, but man were baseball-playing vampires not compelling now.

At least the end was getting kind of exciting. Annie couldn't believe there were three more of these.

(And little did she know that at least the next two were really kind of boring. The fourth book was where it was at in terms of the real crazy shit.)

Anyway, she was behind the bar today with her book, trying to wrap up the last thirty or so pages and occasionally trying to get Tiny interested. "Oh, Tiny, I think he's gonna have to turn her into a vampire to save her!"

Tiny - who probably knew that, again, the fourth book was the crazy one - declined to comment.

Beau wasn't starting classes just yet, but she did have a shiny (if really basic) new laptop that she had with her at work today, because she was still A) getting familiar with how it worked, B) getting all the software she was going to need set up, and C) making sure she had all the textbooks and materials she was going to need.

One of those things was prompting occasional intense outbursts of sputtering and swearing, and it wasn't anything that had to do with being able to use the computer itself. Things like "bullshit" and "fucking ripoff" seemed to be a recurring theme here.

Good thing Beau had proficiency in search engines now already had a nice solid grasp on how to search for things on the Internet, at least, because it looked like all her down time today was going to go into researching less exorbitant ways to get a hold of the books she was going to need. Which were not entirely legal, necessarily, and wow, it was a good thing that Beau, whose teenage years had been devoted to finding every possible form of rebellion (and building herself a nice solid criminal record in the process) had a pretty good aptitude and absolutely no compunction whatsoever about finding... alternative sources.

The nice thing about working at a gym, too, was that working off any frustration or annoyance that built up in the process was really, really not a problem. She was just safety-testing the equipment. Really.

[OOC: If I had posted last night's draft of this you would know exactly how many times I fell asleep writing it, but anyway, open! Today at work is not going to be fun so SP is super going to be a thing.]

The picnic had been busy, she had met her new roommate, and Seivarden had been distracted from thinking about Breq leaving until she got home. Since then she had been thinking about it. A lot. Most worrying was that Breq had said nothing about when she could return home, and what she had said had implied that it could be a while.

So Seivarden had spent time at the gym, played with Issa, watched Radchaai entertainments, and whatever else she could think of.

Now she was mixing martinis. That she luckily wasn't tempted to drink.

Special:
Any type of martini

She would google the ones she didn't know.

Duke had spent the first few days back from vacation cleaning and tuning up his boat. He hadn't taken a trip with her that long in ages, and he'd been a bit too . . . distracted to do the upkeep while they were on the go, like he usually did.

But the Rouge was in ship-shape now, pardon the pun, and Duke was starting to feel the post-holiday, back-to-real-life slump. He was left with it being winter and January.

He wasn't a fan.

So he went out for a hot drink, that he didn't even spike. He grabbed himself a muffin while he was at it -- chocolate chip, what was he, a saint? -- and settled into a table by the window to people watch.

At least this wasn't January in Maine.

Steve, sling and all, was back in the office and as part of the New Year's Resolution the Troopers didn't know they'd made, had everyone out and running in the cold bright and early that morning.

And now, Steve felt, he was being punished for caring about their heart health. The phone was ringing constantly--misdials from a number where people could scream and hang up--but the Troopers had all come down with a case of sudden deafness.

The phone rang again. Steve shot a baleful look at Ralph, who was ignoring him. "Troo--" he began just as the shrieking started.

So far 2021 was off to a stellar start.

Alouette was chasing dust motes through patches of sunlight in the post office today, which as far as Éponine was concerned made it a more pleasant, even welcoming place, because what place couldn't be improved by the presence of a friendly, playful cat? If anyone suggested such places even existed, she might decide they could never be trusted.

It was not a terribly busy day, certainly not in comparison to how hectic the days leading up to Christmas had been -- and that was before factoring in all the increasingly absurd and dangerous events that had plagued the island, even. Éponine was content with that.

There was a NOW HIRING sign up in the window, seeing as it was a new school term and all, and she had a newly-made pot of hot coffee and a box of freshly baked cookies given to her by one of the little old ladies who came in regularly to check her mailbox. Éponine considered this a cautiously optimistic sign for how the rest of the day would go.

[OOC: Post/post office open! Same SP caveat as yesterday though. Whee.]
