Vida was moving about the store, checking the flowers for freshness, when she heard a skittering from a corner and looked down to see a small green creature attempting to hide behind a potted plant. "Well, hello, little one," she said kindly. "Are you a gremlin? People warned me about you, but you look harmless enough to me."
The gremlin eyed Vida suspiciously. This was not a reaction it was used to. Most of the time people would be throwing things and yelling by now.
"You poor thing," Vida said, looking the gremlin over with a critical eye. "No wonder people said you're not very friendly. Believe it or not, this dainty flower you see before you can be a madwoman if she hasn't had her weekly facial. Why don't you come over here and let Auntie Vida fix you up." She crouched down and patted the floor next to her.
Definitely not a reaction the gremlin had ever seen. Curious, it drew closer, wary for any sort of gremlin trap.
"Your skin looks so dreadfully dry," Vida said, clucking her tongue. "May I?" When the gremlin didn't give anything that might be interpreted as a negative response, she reached out to pat its cheek. "Absolutely parched. Pumpkin, you have got to moisturize, preferably with at least SPF 15 so you can protect yourself from the sun." She reached for purse and pulled out a jar, opening it and swiping some white cream on her fingertips. "This has vitamin E and wheat germ oil," she continued, dabbing the cream on the gremlin's cheek. "Those are natural antioxidants that will moisturize the skin and protect against premature aging. And it's also got broad-spectrum UVA and UVB skin protectors to guard against the sun. You use this every day for a week and I guarantee you'll have a complexion that will have all the other gremlins dying of envy."
The gremlin touched its cheek. It did feel softer. And smelled nice, too.
Vida considered the moisturizer for a moment, then held the rest of the jar out for the gremlin. "Here, pumpkin, consider this a gift. Just tell the other gremlins that Auntie Vida hooked you up when you start getting all those compliments about your skin."
The gremlin eyed the tempting fingers before him, but shrugged and took the moisturizer. It flashed Vida a toothy smile and skittered off.
"My first gremlin and already I've improved relations," Vida said, smiling and quite pleased with herself. "Sometimes, it really does just take a fairy."
