"This place," Astrid decided, announcing it to no one in particular because there wasn't anyone else in the shop when she said it, "has really gone to the birds."

The birds in the bonsai did not appreciate her joke.

But it was fine. Astrid had some Easter orders to take care of, which she felt were actually kind of fun because she liked the bright colors and the ideas of renewal and rebirth that went into them, all the little pagan hints that had been slipped into the most Christian of holidays, and it worked well to distract her from wondering just how long it would be before she heard back from Susan about that meeting with her mother.

And then she wondered if she could get any of the birds to sit still and go along with some of the arrangements, and if the canary at T&C would be jealous of her working with other birds.

You know. Typical, normal thoughts for teenagers to have about their jobs.

It was a good thing that this job didn't demand a whole lot out of Tisarwat, because she was too distracted with far more important things than CD sales, instrument maintenence, stereo equipment, and potentially sentient headphone wire monsters in the basement to get much work done today at all. Because the news from Seivarden last night had been huge and, while she was a little irritated that it had come to her through Seivarden instead of directly, it had been almost two years for her (here, anyway) since she'd left the Radch and now she could (allegedly) finally go back.

The urge to just go careening back into her galaxy was strong, but she knew better than to do that. She needed to understand that it was a privledge that could be taken away just as easily as it was given. She didn't want to seem too eager, either, and have Breq regret this allowance as soon as it was given. And she wanted to be smart about it. If they were afforded small, brief visits, she'd have to make the most out of them.

But Lucille had expressed wanting to see more of her world...

...and there was no doubt her old friends on Athoek would be glad to see her and show her and her friend around the station. Where surely there would be clue, hints, suggestions of how things were going.

She could show Lucille the gardens. She could see Basnaaid again.

And Summer had fielded the idea of her class maybe visiting the Radch one of these days, too.

It could definitely work. After all, Tisarwat back at Athoek was a social creature, out almost every night, seeing Medic on the regular for her hangovers, it would make sense that she would want to slip back into it on occasion, and very few people would suspect her of any ulterior motives...

...Breq might. That was the whole reason she was sent here, wasn't it? Ulterior motives? But it would be a shame to at least not try...

Tisarwat was so deep into her own head with plotting and planning that she hadn't even noticed her tea had gone cold several times, but she always, dutifully, just made herself another pot, to the same results.

Which was fine. Because now she could add 'ran out of tea' to her list of 'legitimate reasons to go home'.

Let it be known that unless there was a problem, Kitty got to work early. So she was surprised to find a raging party already going on.

Tino, missing a shirt but handing out plenty of those shots in test tubes, had decided to advertise Caritas as a spring break destination, and these kids had actually fallen for it. It was also possible they'd started drinking too early enough to care.

Okay. Well. Kitty was going to have to line up rickshaws and do a hell of a lot of cleanup but at least Lexi's college was paid for?

After last week, Faye had hatched (tee hee) a plan.

Instead of putting a sign warning about the duck closet -- since, first of all, Sabine was right, they might not even be duckies by now -- she put a different sign on that door.

FREE TOYS

Technically it was true if the duckies were still in there, which was really the beauty of the whole thing.

Yesterday had certainly been a big blast of whatever, and Lucifer was glad to put it behind him. Just about as glad as he was to be back in the club, behind the piano.

Dealing with the fact Tiny had hired an accompanying guitarist for some godforsaken reason.

What followed was about an hour's worth of passive-aggressive musical battle, until somehow, inexplicably, they fell in sync on a Tracy Chapman song.

Lucifer would take it for the evening. And then bar the man from ever coming back again.
